The Khmer Rouge soldiers who turned neighbors into executioners.
The ordinary Germans who silently watched as the Holocaust unfolded.
The crowds in Nanking who cheered while women were brutalized in the streets.
The bystanders who film tragedies instead of helping.
The neighbors who join in bullying because it’s easier than standing apart.
The everyday people who let cruelty feel like entertainment.
The voices in a crowd that chant for death instead of whispering for mercy.
Story :
In China, a 19-year-old girl sat on the edge of a tall building for two hours after being assaulted by a teacher. A fireman tried desperately to pull her back, but below, hundreds chanted, “1, 2, 3, jump!” and streamed her pain live. The girl whispered to the fireman, “Thank you, you are a good man, but I have to go now,” and slipped from his hands. The crowd applauded as she died. The fireman, newly married just 20 minutes earlier, collapsed in grief.
The most evil humans in history? Sometimes, it isn’t leaders with power or names we memorize. It’s the crowd , ordinary people who choose cruelty when compassion was possible. |
